Commodities trading

Context

With a market share estimated at 25%, Switzerland is the biggest commodities trading hub in the world. In 2011, Public Eye published the first book on this unknown and secretive sector. Since then, we have been using in-depth research and analysis to show how Swiss companies contribute to corruption, embezzlement and human rights violations. And with a fictitious commodities supervisory authority (ROHMA) we propose a solution to how our country could combat the resource curse.

Case studies Research

With extensive research, Public Eye sheds light on the dubious practices of commodities trading companies. The cases we unveil repeatedly demonstrate how Swiss companies contribute to the resource curse: through corruption and business with elites of producer countries who capture the lion’s share of resource wealth. Public Eye’s research reveals these abuses and puts pressure on commodities companies and the government to ensure that everyone benefits from these countries’ wealth.
